Q*bert Control Panel Overlays
As I began the restoration of my Q*bert I discovered that there were
several different reproduction CPOs made for this machine. Click the images below to see
an enlarged version.
This is the NOS Gottlieb CPO I found. It is now installed on my machine and looks beautiful!
This is a Willis CPO. I found this one on Mark Davidson's Basement Arcade. This one is completely different from the two shown below. This one more closely resembles the original Gottlieb CPO. Note that Q*bert is saying "?#@*!" instead of his usual "@!#?@!"
This is the control panel as it appeared on my machine when I received it. This is a Willis reproduction CPO as well. Note the creatures, etc. running up the sides of the pyramid. Each one has either a description or a point value listed adjacent to it.
I found this CPO on an eBay auction by Safe Stuff. This, too, is a Willis reproduction, but it is apparently different than the one above. Note that instead of creatures there are merely circles going up the sides of the pyramid. All else appears the same.
This is a CPO for the truly rare Q*bert's Qubes machine made by Mylstar. Although it isn't for the original Q*Bert, it is just so cool that I've decided to include it here. |
The only way I can explain the differences between the Willis CPOs is that they produced the top one first, but it was too close to the original art for Gottlieb's lawyer's tastes, so they then produced the second one. Although they changed the background significantly, the characters still *very* closely resemble those of the original art. My guess is that the lawyers got involved again, so Willis changed to the design of the CPO third one. I have no proof that this is the reasoning behind the changes, but why else would Willis go to the effort? If you have any info on this, please let me know at chumblespuzz@cademo.com.
